Maintaining Perfect Auto Glass Part Eight
The way this will normally work is to fill the dent or chip with something that will solidify. The good news is that normally a chip or crack will not actually result in there being a direct hole through and out, but instead in just external damage. The reason for this is that a windshield is in fact not made of a single pane of glass but two that are completely identical. These two panes of glass are then pressed together with no spaces so that they appear as one. Between those two panes of glass though is a layer of laminate plastic. The idea then is that the laminate plastic will hold the two panes of glass together in the scenario that they should break. This then in turn will mean that a stone would normally only go through the one layer of glass resulting in just a chip or scratch that affected the surface and a second inside layer that was completely find and untouched.
All this then means that you can benefit from auto glass repair in many cases without needing to replace the entire windshield. This is because only one layer of glass needs to be repaired which can be achieved with filler.
