Windshield Replacement – Part 6 Windshield Replacement

Dangers of windscreen damage

September 17th, 2011

Many people see a chip or slight crack on a windscreen and think nothing of it, there is a definite increased chance though that window will shatter. With a chip chances are that it will first begin to crack more, meaning you have to then get a new windscreen instead of a repair. A crack though and sometimes a chip can be enough to make a windscreen shatter. This shattering can sometimes be quite suddenly, a large bump can do it or another stone or debris hitting your windscreen. It can even in fact be just going fast that splits and shatters a windscreen: the pressure of air on a windscreen that is damaged may be to much for it to withstand. When a windscreen shatters you will be covered in glass, for a few seconds you will be unable to see and the shock will often send you into an accident. If you survive the initial damage there is a good chance that you will not be unable to see as you will have the wind blowing into your eyes, but hopefully no glass actually in your eyes. Being small shards shattered glass is unlikely to do too much damage other than a few lacerations but of course if it does shatter into your eyes this is serious. If you’re lucky you can avoid an accident and get your car safely to the side of the road but sadly many people aren’t as lucky.

Fast windscreen replacement

September 17th, 2011

With windscreen replacement speed is often key, you need to be able to get on with your day and the things you have to do and a shattered or smashed windscreen can waste a day in some cases. Luckily you can get someone out quite fast, very fast in an urban area. If you have got stuck out in the dessert miles form anywhere it will inevitably take a little longer. It certainly is still best to wait for a windscreen specialist to come to you, you may need to call and tell them where you are of course, but what isn’t a good idea is to try to drive a car with a shattered windscreen any distance, move it off the road and that is pretty much it. You will after all be covered in shards of glass, they aren’t big enough to cause serious injuries but can still cut you. A windscreen repairer will come out and remove your windscreen or what is left of it, mainly with a vacuum cleaner as well as any bits still on your window: this is the bit that takes time actually fitting the windscreen shouldn’t take too long, you have to get it right first time ideally and being experts they usually will: then you can be on your way.

Auto glass for commercial vehicles

September 17th, 2011

If you have a car for getting around then a smashed or shattered windscreen is quite inconvenient, if you use a vehicle for work though then it can be a major disaster being unable to go any further due to a damaged or broken windshield. Many people use vans for work and cover massive numbers of miles in them, this increases the risk of a damaged windscreen and also the fact that van and truck wind shields are almost vertical means that stones may fly up and hit them harder than on a car.

If you are a delivery driver of some sort then a broken windshield means that you can’t deliver items and customers are left waiting, if you are a tradesman then you may be unable to reach customers to deliver services including urgent services like plumbing or locksmith services. You of course end up losing business and money plus you may well find you are stuck in the middle of nowhere. An auto glass specialist though will be able to come out to you and if you have a popular make and model of van then they probably have the screen in stock. Some places even have truck windscreens in stock though you are probably going to have to wait a little longer.

Why you shouldn’t try to replace your own windscreen

September 17th, 2011

As car parts go fitting a windscreen may look like one of the easy jobs, it isn’t and you will actually struggle to find somewhere to buy a windscreen to fit yourself from. Many auto windscreen fitters manufacturer windscreens themselves and hold a stock, garages rarely fit windscreens for the reason that they are difficult to do, and because they can’t afford to hold the stock they would need to. You possibly could get a second-hand windscreen from a scrap yard or a car someone is breaking for parts. These second-hand screens themselves may be dangerous: they can be easily damaged removing them and may have damage already. When you come to fit a windscreen you need to set it perfectly and first time: getting it wrong and bashing it about can easily cause it to shatter or cause chips and cracks. Get a windscreen on even slightly out of place and it will crack, maybe not straight away but worse still on the highway when you get up some speed and the air pressure causes it to crack if it isn’t supported evenly all of the way around; bits of the old windscreen as well that may be miniscule will mean the screen won’t sit properly and may have to much pressure on one point so a crack may at least start from there.

Getting your windscreen replaced when out on the road

September 17th, 2011

A windscreen can go at any time, looking out for damage may help you avoid a sudden crack or shattered windscreen but you may just be unlucky, one stone may cause a chip but could cause your shield to shatter as well. So you could well be stuck on the side of a dark dessert highway or somewhere equally remote, unable to continue driving, unless you happen to have some driving goggles with you and even then your car is full of shards of glass. The best people to call may well be a nationwide windscreen company who you know are likely to have a branch somewhere nearby, though if you can find one more locally then this may be quicker. Many windshield replacement companies work 24 hours a day and seven days a week you will be pleased to hear. Also importantly they keep a lot of different windshield in stock for popular cars and vans as well. They will get to you as soon as possible, when they arrive the replacement of a windscreen itself is a relatively quick job. Cleaning up the old windscreen may take longer: they carry vacuums though and can get up all the broken glass. They will also of course have to remove broken glass from the frame itself.

Why you should get windscreen damage repaired quickly

September 17th, 2011

Many people get a chip in their windscreen and ignore it, it doesn’t effect their ability to drive the car and it doesn’t look dangerous. A chip will often become a crack, the crack slowly increases in size, at a certain point many more people will go to have a cracked windscreen repaired, though some may well leave it a little while. These people will find that they now have to pay for a whole new screen when before the chip could have been easily repaired. They will also find that the repair to the chip could have been done in minutes by a specialist that would come to them at their home or even at their work. Some people of course leave a cracked windscreen, they may well find that on a fast road with the air pressure on it that it suddenly shatters and that they found themselves covered in shards of glass with the wind blowing in their faces, many of these people will find they lose control of the car in this situation as well, others will struggle to get the car slowed down and safely to the side of the road where they will be stuck while they wait for a repairer to come out and fit a new windscreen for which they will also have to pay an emergency call out charge often.

Looking out for windscreen damage

September 17th, 2011

Spotting damage to a windscreen before it gets worse or shatters can save you a lot of time and money, it can also potentially saved lives. A windscreen that suddenly shattered will very often cause an accident and shattering often happens at high speeds to make it all the more dangerous.

Look out for chips as well as cracks, chips can usually be repaired and a resin used to make sure the windscreen stays tough. Look for chips and get them fixed before they get worse: make sure you look at all areas of the windscreen including on the passengers side. As for cracks these can be tougher to sport but can easily get worse and lead to a screen shattering. Cracks often start from the edges of the glass so look carefully around the sides for a crack emerging from the rubber keeping the screen in place. Cracks are also difficult to see from certain angles and so you may need to look at your screen from an acute angle to see cracks that may be right in front of your driving position but impossible to see. Once you find damage don’t wait around, get it fixed as soon as possible, don’t go on fast roads beforehand and get a screen specialist to come to you with a new screen if needed.

The importance of a professionally fitted windscreen

September 17th, 2011

Fitting a windshield isn’t easy it is definitely not something you should attempt yourself, many people will try to fit a windshield, often from a scrap yard, but they often find the new screen breaks soon after being added. A windscreen must be placed perfectly, also any damage around the edges of the windscreen can lead to cracks starting to form. A windshield must rest perfectly on the vehicle so that the weight is equaled out all the way around. A shard of glass from the previous windscreen may be enough to cause a crack or shattering quite soon after being fitted. In fact badly fitted windscreens tend to crack or shatter the first time you go any speed and the air pressure on the screen cause the crack to form: a shattered windscreen at high speeds is incredibly dangerous of course, you suddenly find yourself covered in glass and driving with the wind blowing straight in your eyes, you then have to slow down and safely get to the side of the road: not easy in a many laned super highway. Many garages won’t even go near windscreens, others try and fail; a professional specialist in windscreens is likely to be the best option for you to get a safe replacement done.

Windshield replacement

September 17th, 2011

Windscreen replacements are often done only when the windscreen shatters, often though damage is present before and a quick replacement can avoid a shattered windscreen and the potential injuries and accident that results.
A windscreen that has any damage should be checked, chips may be easy to fix but cracks may mean that a new windscreen is needed. When checking your windscreen for damage make sure you check around the sides of windscreens as many cracks start here. When you do decide a new windscreen is needed you could go to a garage but many don’t do windscreens, the reason for this is partly the amount of stock they would need to hold and the amount of skill involved in successfully fitting a windshield. A windshield specialist will have many screens in stock for the most popular vehicles and models and may be able to get others very quickly, often next day. They can even come to you and fit the windscreen on site, this may well be necessary if the windscreen is already shattered. The windscreen must be placed perfectly and supported evenly all around so it doesn’t break, a poor job can mean your new windshield cracks again soon after being fitted.

Auto glass emergency repairs

September 17th, 2011

If your windshield or other auto glass suddenly breaks including cracks and shattering then you may well have an emergency. Many of us rely on our cars to get around including to work and often for work, a day without it may be too long: even half a day. If you are out on the road of course then a windscreen shattering or becoming badly cracked so shattering is likely means that you then have to stop and stop your day. You may be in a hurry and may even be a long way from home often stuck out on the side of a road. What you need is an emergency auto glass repairer though and they are surprisingly cheap and efficient. Many come out 24 hours a day and seven days a week, if it is 3am on a Sunday morning when your windscreen goes on the freeway then you need them in fact more urgently than during the day. On some windshield damage such as chips repairs can be done to strengthen your windscreen and make the damage less visible, often though a replacement is needed. Auto windscreen specialists hold many windscreens for wide range of vehicles in stock and can bring one out to you to fit wherever you may be.
