Windshield Replacement – Part 13

Windshield Replacement – Part 13 Windshield Replacement

Choosing to call a specialist or head to a garage for windscreen replacement

February 24th, 2011

If you are unlucky enough to have a damaged or broken windscreen or other car or van window then you will want to get back on to the road as quickly as possible and also as cheaply as possible. At the same time it is also important to be safe and have a repair or replacement that will last and save you having to pay out again later.
Now firstly for replacements, it may seem easier and quicker to go to your local garage perhaps one you visit for other work on your car. The problem starts in getting there if you have no windscreen or a dangerous windscreen unless you are going to don a pair of driving goggles. If you manage to get it to a garage chances are if they will do the replacement that they will have to order the specific windscreen in for you, it could well be a few days before you can use your vehicle again. Also replacing a windscreen is difficult as it must be done with a great deal of precision to make sure that it wont crack or shatter: what can happen is that a badly replaced windscreen can have pressure either from the sides or on certain points that lead to stresses on the glass that can lead to cracks and even shattering. It is better to use an auto glass specialist who can come out to you with a windscreen from their stock if you have a popular vehicle and then an experienced windscreen fitter can repair your windscreen. Likewise for small cracks and chips that can be mended an autoglass specialist can come out to you with the tools and tricks of their trade to do a repair in minutes meaning you can then get back to driving straight away.

Emergency glass replacements services

February 24th, 2011

It may be that you are on a journey far from home and your windscreen gets hit by a stone and shatters or that you’re a commercial traveller on the way to an appointment and that tiny crack on your windscreen suddenly expands significantly as you go over a bump making it unsafe to continue. Whatever the reason why your windscreen is unsafe or completely absent from where it should be you probably will need it fixed quickly. Like any auto break down its really not nice being stuck at the side of the road especially with children and on fast highways with cars rushing past. If your windscreen is missing you may not even be able to shelter in your car from the worst the weather can throw at you. Emergency auto glass repairers can come out to you quickly and can even give you an ETA when you call them up. If you need a whole new windscreen they can often get one from stock at their depot if your car or other vehicle is a fairly common design. They can even help you remove broken glass from your car and many carry a portable vacuum with them to pick up dangerous pieces of shattered glass.

Van windscreen replacement

February 24th, 2011

The way van windscreens are designed means they have a higher chance than car windows of sustaining damage they are at an angle much more vertical than a car meaning stones and debris will hit them more straight on with more full force rather than glancing off as they may on some cars especially with more slanted windows. Add to that the size of van windows generally being more and they are quite fragile compared to a car window. The amount you drive around if you are a van driver is much higher as well of course which obviously increases your chances again of getting a crack or a chip on your windscreen and also decreases the chance you will find time to get small cracks and chips fixed before they spread or the screen shatters.
If your windscreen does crack, smash or shatter though you could be off the road for some time, if possible do try and get your small cracks and chips fixed; many windscreen repairers can book a time to come out to you and fix your chips within a few minutes. If your windscreen does go unexpectedly though then as a commercial van driver you need to get back on the road as soon as possible, maybe you’re part way through a delivery or heading to a job, delays could mean you don’t get paid or worse still permanently lose a customer. Luckily many windscreen repairers can come out to you with an emergency service so they are with you quickly bringing a windscreen to match your vehicle from stock if it’s a common vehicle type.

Replacing side windows, rear windows and other car glass

February 24th, 2011

It may be that windscreens go most often and it would be hard to argue that they aren’t also most important. However side windows and rear windows do also break sometimes and they are important. Many people will use some card or board to patch them up but this may not be a great idea even for a short while if the vehicle is in use. For a start there’s the ease of breaking into your car, even if you have no valuables left you never know whose going to wander past and fancy a joyride.
Then there’s the leaking if it rains, water in your car gets into you electrics which gets into your wallet, well metaphorically speaking it gets into your wallet and grabs a wad of money to fix the mess.
Now if you are out on the road of course then your problems get worse, in a car you really need all your windows to see all around you, your mirrors are smaller than on a van because with a car you are expected to be able to see out of your rear view mirror through the back and look over your shoulders for blind spots. As for putting card or board in your front side windows simply don’t if you are going to drive somewhere.

Avoid the danger of a shattered windscreen

February 24th, 2011

A shattered windscreen is not only very inconvenient, especially if you use your vehicles for work, but extremely dangerous especially at high speeds. Its not so much the glass itself that is dangerous, unlike plate glass the glass in a windscreen will shatter into tiny fragments which are sharp but not big enough to do major damage unless you are unlucky enough that they get into your eyes. The danger is more in the shock of having a windscreen smash which will usually be sudden and without warning, this could be due to excess pressure on a badly fitted windscreen or a windscreen which already has damage including chips or small cracks. Some people even continue driving when a small part of their windscreen is shattered but has stuck together.
The shock may cause you to act too abruptly and either lose control of your car or your reaction may be to slam on your brakes which may see the car behind you collide with you. If you do keep control of your car suddenly having the wind and rain lashing against your face may make it almost impossible to see if you are going at a fast speed and it may be you will struggle to get your car to a safe haven while avoiding an accident.
Avoid these risks by making sure any small cracks and chips are quickly repaired and make sure you regularly have a close examination for cracks and chips that may not be instantly apparent.

The importance of getting a professional auto glass replacement

February 24th, 2011

If you are going to change any windows on a car there are a few options to you. Some people might try and do it themselves to save money, others might get a local garage to do it which may be a good idea if they have experience but your best bet is generally to use an experienced specialist for the job of fitting new windows especially windscreens.
It is unfortunately very easy to make a mistake when putting in a front or rear windscreen, most of which will lead to a broken windscreen straight away but some may only see it break later. Tiny cracks made when putting the windscreen in place or placing a windscreen so that it doesn’t quite sit right and their is extra pressure on one or some points can lead to cracks forming quickly or to the windscreen even shattering unexpectedly which may well be when you start to get up to a high speed for the first time and the pressure of air on the windscreen becomes too much.
Check what experience your garage has of fitting windscreens before letting them do the job if they simply think its worth having a go but haven’t done it before its best to go to a auto windscreen replacement specialist. If your thinking about doing it yourself its probably a bad idea but if you must then make sure you know what you are doing beforehand.

Spotting cracks before they grow

February 24th, 2011

Windscreens can easily get small chips and cracks on them, this is the time to catch them though before they grow meaning that you need a new windscreen or even lead to you windscreen shattering which can be dangerous and easily cause an accident.
If a chip occurs while you are driving where a stone is thrown up and hits the screen right in front of you you are likely to know that the chip is there. If however it hits elsewhere on the windscreen or a crack forms for some other reason it can be more difficult to notice and especially so on other windows which can get cracks too, the rear windscreen in particular you probably rarely look at close up at all.
Make an effort every now and again to check for chips and cracks especially when there is a lot of grit on the road in icy weather.
You may need to look at your windscreen at an angle to see some cracks, also try using a torch at night which may catch the crack and make it more visible. While at this check for cracks forming near the edges of your windows especially in corners that may just be appearing above the rubber around windows.

Auto Glass repairs

February 24th, 2011

Auto Glass repairs range from fixing a chip or a crack on a windscreen to stop it spreading to replacing entire pieces of glass.
Of course the fixes to chips and minor cracks are the easiest and therefore the cheapest, far cheaper than waiting until the crack grows or your windscreen shatters. Most repairers will come to you for this work and use portable machinery to fill and seal any gaps leaving glass looking as good as new.
When you want a whole window replacing it gets a bit more complicated, especially if your windscreen isn’t a standard shape or design which places will have in stock. You may be able to get someone to come out to you but this could get expensive though sometimes with no windscreen it is your only option.
Windscreens and rear windscreens are actually quite easy to replace lifting out the old glass and lifting in the new glass. What may take more time is side windows where the door may have to be taken apart to remove the glass and put in a replacement and even then it is a fiddly job. It is likely though that these kind of broken windows along the sides of the car will be due to break in rather than damage while driving as it is the windscreen of course that gets the brunt of stones and other debris flying at it.

Finding a windscreen repairer

February 24th, 2011

If you have a small crack or chip on your windscreen you may be keen to get it fixed straight away but worried about the cost. If you have a major crack on your windscreen or it is partly shattered then finding a windscreen repairer is a matter of emergency if you want to use your vehicle.

You may have places to be or use your vehicle for work so you may want a windscreen repairer with an emergency call out service, some even work 24 hours and 7 days a week, though not the same man or woman.

There may be a trade off between cost and quickness when calling up a windscreen repairer, don’t let on its urgent at first and they may be able to come out straight away anyway otherwise they may come out just as quickly but add a bit on.
Have a look online for a good repairer or talk to people you know who have used them to see if they would recommend whoever they used. Online it may be that you can check testimonials and also check if they belong to any trade bodies.
Of course you may well be stranded somewhere without a windscreen in which case a call to directory services may be your best bet and you may have to pay whatever someone charges.

Keep an eye out for windscreen damage

February 24th, 2011

It happens all too easily, a slight crack in your windscreen. Stones fly up and hit your windscreen or an old windscreen starts to crack from the edge. It could even be a cat or another animal jumping on your car that starts the problem. The worst time for chips is in the winter when there’s grit on the road to stop them icing over but at the same time there’s also the cold that can make cracks quickly expand. The cold is most likely to see a crack expand when you suddenly warm up a cold windscreen so be careful about sticking your heater on full to defrost a frozen windscreen if it has a crack or you think it may have a crack. As well as the cold weather bumps and jolts in your car can make a crack quickly spread or even cause a damaged windscreen to shatter. If your windscreen shatters suddenly while you are driving you and other road users are instantly in danger even if the shock of the windscreen shattering doesn’t put you off course you may struggle to see where you are going at fast speeds especially in wind and rain or snow.

Check all car windows for damage regularly but especially the windscreen, you may have to look very closely and they may only be visible from some angles sometimes looking across rather than directly through the screen. As well a simple cracks look out for chips as well even when they haven’t come right through the glass. Look out for cracks starting from edges and look for cracks peaking out from rubber seals.
