Staying Safe on Your Motorcycle Part One

Safety on a motorcycle is incredibly important, and in some ways more important even than safety in the car. The reason for this is that there is precious little material between the driver and the road, meaning that a crash or accident is more likely to end badly for a driver of a motorbike than the driver and passengers of a car. Furthermore the motorcycle rider is required to consciously keep their bike balanced upright meaning a lapse in judgement could cause them to fall or swerve out of control unlike in a car.
For all these reasons motorbike riders must ensure they have the correct protective gear. When you fall off a bike on the motorway you have to contend with the initial shock of the fall (possibly banging your head), as well as the cuts you could receive from rolling and then the potential threat of oncoming cars. In such situations protective gear could easily mean the difference between life and death, so you must ensure you are properly protected. That means a good motorbike helmet that won’t come off, a leather jacket and trousers with padding, knee and shin pads, gloves and motorcycle boots.
Once you’ve taken care of yourself, you then need to ensure your bike is up to scratch and as safe as it could be. One way to check this is to look at the windshield (or technically ‘aeroshield’).
